Product Description

PVB Laminated Glass – Technical Specifications & Application Guide

PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) laminated glass is an engineered safety glass consisting of two or more glass plies bonded with a tough PVB interlayer, creating a composite material that maintains integrity when broken. This construction provides unique performance characteristics for security, acoustic control, and UV protection.

Material Composition & Structure

  1. Standard Construction:

    • 2 x 3mm annealed glass + 0.38mm PVB = 6.38mm total thickness

    • Available configurations up to 12mm glass + 2.28mm PVB per layer

  2. PVB Interlayer Variants:

    • Standard Clear: 0.38mm, 0.76mm, 1.52mm thicknesses

    • Acoustic PVB: STC improvement up to 5dB vs standard

    • Colored PVB: 20+ color options (RGB values available)

    • Structural PVB: High-modulus (SentryGlas®)

  3. Glass Compatibility:

    • Float, tempered, heat-strengthened, Low-E coated

    • Can combine with patterned/tinted glass

      • 6mm: STC 35

      • 10mm: STC 42

      • 12mm + acoustic PVB: STC 48

Manufacturing Process Overview

  1. Glass Preparation:

    • Cutting to size (±1mm tolerance)

    • Edge polishing (arrissé edges)

  2. PVB Layup:

    • Clean room environment (Class 1000)

    • 0.5mm overlap on all sides

  3. Autoclave Process:

    • 135-150°C at 12-15 bar pressure

Leading Interlayer Manufacturers

  1. Eastman Chemical (Saflex®)

    • Standard & acoustic PVB

    • Color stable to ΔE<3 after 10 years

  2. DuPont (SentryGlas®)

    • 5x stiffer than standard PVB

    • For structural applications

  3. Kuraray (Trosifol®)

Design Considerations

  1. Edge Treatment:

    • Minimum 10mm bite for framing

    • Silicone edge seals recommended

  2. Structural Calculations:

    • Reduced allowable stress vs monolithic:

      • Annealed: 20% reduction

      • Tempered: 15% reduction

  3. Compatibility:

    • Avoid direct contact with:

      • PVC frames

      • Certain sealants (test required)

Sustainability Features

  • Recyclable: Glass/PVB separation possible

  • Low VOC: <50μg/m³ emissions

  • Cradle-to-Cradle: Gold certified options

  • Embodied Carbon: 15-20kg CO₂/m²

Failure Modes & Prevention

  1. Delamination:

    • Causes: Moisture ingress, poor autoclaving

    • Prevention: Proper edge sealing

  2. PVB Discoloration:

    • Causes: UV exposure, heat
