PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) laminated glass is an engineered safety glass consisting of two or more glass plies bonded with a tough PVB interlayer, creating a composite material that maintains integrity when broken. This construction provides unique performance characteristics for security, acoustic control, and UV protection.
Standard Construction:
2 x 3mm annealed glass + 0.38mm PVB = 6.38mm total thickness
Available configurations up to 12mm glass + 2.28mm PVB per layer
PVB Interlayer Variants:
Standard Clear: 0.38mm, 0.76mm, 1.52mm thicknesses
Acoustic PVB: STC improvement up to 5dB vs standard
Colored PVB: 20+ color options (RGB values available)
Structural PVB: High-modulus (SentryGlas®)
Glass Compatibility:
Float, tempered, heat-strengthened, Low-E coated
Can combine with patterned/tinted glass
Light Transmission:
Clear PVB: 89-91% of base glass VLT
Tinted PVB: 15-80% VLT depending on color
UV Blocking:
99.5% UV rejection (<380nm)
Prevents interior fading (ISO 18909)
Temperature Range:
Service: -40°C to +80°C continuous
Peak: 120°C for 2 hours (SentryGlas®)
Security Glazing:
EN 356 P5A (Manual attack resistance)
ASTM F1233 (Ballistic resistance)
Hurricane Resistance:
Passes TAS 201/202 impact tests
Miami-Dade County approved
Acoustic Performance:
STC ratings:
6mm: STC 35
10mm: STC 42
12mm + acoustic PVB: STC 48
Glass Preparation:
Cutting to size (±1mm tolerance)
Edge polishing (arrissé edges)
PVB Layup:
Clean room environment (Class 1000)
0.5mm overlap on all sides
Autoclave Process:
135-150°C at 12-15 bar pressure
2-4 hour cycle time

Edge Treatment:
Minimum 10mm bite for framing
Silicone edge seals recommended
Structural Calculations:
Reduced allowable stress vs monolithic:
Annealed: 20% reduction
Tempered: 15% reduction
Compatibility:
Avoid direct contact with:
PVC frames
Certain sealants (test required)
Recyclable: Glass/PVB separation possible
Low VOC: <50μg/m³ emissions
Cradle-to-Cradle: Gold certified options
Embodied Carbon: 15-20kg CO₂/m²
Delamination:
Causes: Moisture ingress, poor autoclaving
Prevention: Proper edge sealing
PVB Discoloration:
Causes: UV exposure, heat
Prevention: Use UV-stable formulations
Edge Cracking:
Causes: Thermal stress
Prevention: Adequate edge deletion
